Keeping Your Stress Under Control Like You Would a Puppy

June 12th, 2008 PhilRuebens Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

Stress is something that can easily take over your entire life. It can cause you to lose sleep, to be unable to function in the right way at work or at your home, or have other problems. One of the best things that you can do for yourself is to keep stress under control. This is something that might take practice, and that might take a little bit of work, but if you are able to keep your stress under control, you will be able to enjoy your life even more.

First of all, the best thing that you can do to start keeping stress under control is to figure out where it is coming from. You should be able to trace your stressors back to something - such as a lack of organization, communication, or even overbooking. If you can trace your stressors back to one simple thing, you will be able to begin to clear up some of the stress in your life. If you can get more organized, cut back on the things that you need to do in your life, or improve your communication, you can begin to get your stressors under control.

Meanwhile, however it is important for you to keep stress under control. Remember that sometimes there isn’t anything that you can do about stress or the things that cause it. You might simply have to live with the stress, but that doesn’t mean that you have to allow stress to control your life. There are certain things that you can do to help yourself get stress under control, even if you have to deal with it and can’t get rid of it.

First of all, when you know what you have stress you need to live with, the first thing that you need to is recognize the symptoms of stress for what they are. If you don’t recognize the symptoms that you have, you might think that they are something else, and it might even cause you to have more stress. Therefore, you need to understand what your symptoms are when you are dealing with stress. Then, when you feel those symptoms start to come up, you can relax, and tell yourself that you are experiencing stress. Simply being able to recognize it for what it is can be a great way to help get stress under control.

Next, you want to be sure that you have figured out some relaxation techniques that you can use in your life. These should range from techniques that will take just a few moments, to techniques that you can use for greater bouts of stress. You should have some relaxation and breathing techniques that you can do very easily. Then, when you find yourself in a stressful situation, you can stop for a moment and breathe, and tell yourself that you are going to relax. This is the best way for you to start to deal with stress. You also want to be sure that you have some bigger relaxation techniques that you can do when the stress is really getting to you. These will all help you figure out how to deal with stress in your life and start to get it under control.

Stress, More or Less? You Can Choose What to Do

June 12th, 2008 PhilRuebens Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

Stress is something that affects each person in a different way. Lots of people often think that stress is something that no one can do anything about. In fact, lots of people often succumb to stress because they believe that they can’t change it. However, that is not the case. It is up to you to figure out how stress is going to affect you.

When you are dealing with stress, you are going to be the one who is charge of how it affects you. Whether you are going to have lots of stress, or little stress, you need to be sure that you understand what is going on with it, so that you can decide how much you are going to let it affect you.

The first thing that you need to do when you start to be able to decide how stress is going to affect you is realize that the more you let stress effect you, the more that it will. This sounds like something simple, but stress is an odd thing. It is a physical and mental reaction to certain situations, and it is a reaction that your body and mind might make whether you want to or not. The key to your reactions is going to be your mental state, and the ability to control these stress symptoms.

The first thing that you need to do when you are learning how to cope with stress is learn how to relax. Learning how to relax is something that most people need to be able to do, because it allows them to deal with stress in a way that they never knew or understood before. Relaxing is actually one of the best keys to being able to control stress. There are several types of relaxation exercises that you should be doing, and it is up to you whether or not you use them. However, if you are able to use them, you will be able to control your stress.

There are two types of relaxation that you can do in order to control your stress, and have less of it. The first should be a very short relaxation technique that you can do in order to calm yourself down as you start to feel stressed out. The second is a longer relaxation technique that you should be doing in the evenings or every few days, in order to keep yourself less stressed.

The next thing that you want to do is remember that there are several other things that you can do to make sure that you have less stress. First of all, you should try to be as organized as possible. Being organized is a way that you can make sure you have less stress. If you aren’t organized, you might find that you have more stress because lack of organization leads to more situations in your life that are stressful. Also, if you have too much to you will find that you have more stress, so if you can cut back on some of the things that you are doing, you will find that you experience less stress in your life.

When Stress Takes Over

June 12th, 2008 PhilRuebens Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

Stress is something that everyone has to deal with at one time or another, but there are times when you might feel like your entire life has been affected by it. When stress starts to take over your life, you might feel that you have no control. You might always be on heightened alert, and not able to relax. You might also feel that you have way too much to do, and might not be able to control your life.

When stress is taking over your life, there are several things that you can do about it. First of all, you need to be sure that you are ready to organize your life. Organizing is something that is difficult for many people, but it can lay at the root of a lot of different forms of stress. If you are finding that you have lots of stress, it very well might be that you are not organized. This leads to losing things, forgetting appointments, and just being overall disorganized. If you feel that stress is taking over your life, you want to be sure that you are able to start to get more organized.

If stress is taking over your life, you might also be taking on too much. Often, when you are taking on too much, it feels like you cannot say no. If there are people who are constantly asking you to do things, and if you find that you are overbooked, it might have a lot to do with this. You need to learn how to limit your time and say no to some things if you don’t have enough time. This can be a great way to help yourself when stress has taken over your life.

Relaxation is often thought of as being something that you do when you have extra time. However this is a mistake because if you only allow yourself to relax when you have the time, chances are good that you will find you never have time to relax. However, relaxation is a very important step in allowing yourself to be less stress free. You need to be able to relax, and you need to be able to relax in several ways. First of all, you need to be able to have a breathing and relaxing technique that you can do on a daily basis. You want to be sure that you have something that you can do when it feels like stressors are getting the most of you. Breathing just for a few moments, when it feels like you are getting too stressed, will help you control that stress in your life. There are other breathing techniques that you can use on a weekly or even daily basis, which will only take a few minutes. These will allow you to be able to control the stress in your life.

Learning how to control your life is one of the most important things when it comes to controlling your stress. If you can get your life under control, you will find that you have less stress.

The Truth About the Risks Associated With Public Water Purification Methods and How to Overcome Them

June 12th, 2008 DaveEverett Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

Water purification through chlorination has created numerous health problems, according to physicians, researchers and public health organizations. This is why so many experts are insisting that an in-home water purifier is the only solution.

There are a variety of home water purifiers on the market. Some of them remove chlorine and odor. Some remove additional chemicals and contaminants. It just makes sense to choose a water purifier that blocks everything possible. There is very little difference in price between the best water purifier and the worst, but there is a big difference in quality.

The problems with the use of chlorine by public bodies

Water purification techniques have come a long way since we began adding chlorine to the water in the late 1800s. Public treatment facilities do not use chlorine because it is the safest or even the best way to disinfect the water. Some bacteria, particularly during the spore or cyst stage are resistant to chlorine disinfection.

Public water purification facilities use chlorine because it is the cheapest choice. The level of chlorine found in some tap water is higher than what is recommended as “safe” to swim in. The taste and smell of the tap water is so bad that many people have been using activated carbon water purifiers on their taps for years. But, many people turned to bottled water.

Water purification through chlorine disinfection creates by-products known as THMs. According to the Breast Cancer Fund, “one common factor among women with breast cancer is that they all have 50-60% higher levels of these THMs in their fat tissue than women without breast cancer.” According to the American Journal of Public Health, “Up to two-thirds of the harmful effects of chlorine are due to inhalation and skin absorption while showering.”

Using bottled water doesn’t solve the problems

There are a number of problems with choosing bottled water over bottling your own with a home water purifier. First, there are no regulations regarding which water purification system a bottled water company must use. Almost all bottled water is simply tap water that has been run through water purifiers at the plant.

Recently one bottled water company was required to remove the words “spring water” from its label, since the water did not come from a pure mountain spring, as customers were led to believe. Depending on the location of the factory, the tap water could be of worse quality than what you have in your own home.

If you currently drink only bottled water, you are still showering in chlorinated water. The amount that is absorbed through you skin in the shower is hundreds of times higher than what you would get by drinking the same water. If you are going to shower in it, you may as well be drinking it. Neither option is safe.

The only answer to the problems

You have more control over what you are drinking by choosing a high quality in home water purification system. You can get a single water purifier for the kitchen tap or you can have water purifiers all over the house. To save time and money, some people are choosing a whole house water purification system to provide non-chlorinated, chemical free water every where they go.

While just about any home water purifier can block chlorine, only the best home water purifiers attempt to remove THMs. It is in your best interest to find a home water purification system that successfully blocks THMs. It’s just the safest thing to do.

Herniated Disc - A True Pain in the Back!

June 12th, 2008 VeronaRaymond Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

So you have back pain, and you have been diagnosed with herniated disc. What is most important to get you back on the road to recovery as soon as possible?

Although back pain can occur for many different reasons, one of the most common occurrences of serious back pain comes from a herniated disc. In between the vertebrae of our spine there exists small pockets of fluid which helps the vertebrae to move independently of each other. When one of these discs becomes bulged or perhaps even ruptures, it is commonly known as a herniated disc. Not only can it cause severe pain for the person that is suffering, it can be a life altering event which may have long-term implications. Once you have one of these herniated discs, what can be done to help the situation?

Your doctor may tell you that there is a chance you may need to have surgery if your herniated disc doesn’t improve over time. Don’t let that discourage you, because the fact of the matter is, there are a number of different treatments that can take place if you have a herniated disc. A lot of it has to do with your own personal condition and how it is affecting you. It may also be a matter of the position of the disc in your spine that would determine the best course of treatment. For most individuals, however, the severe pain that comes whenever the disc is first ruptured typically goes away to a certain extent after a week or two. With just rest and taking it easy for a little bit, you may be able to actually overcome a majority of the symptoms within a couple of months. For those that are truly suffering from the pain of a slipped disc, however, a couple of months can almost feel like a lifetime.

There may be some things that can be done in order to speed along the process and to make sure that your healing time is as reduced as possible. More than likely, your doctor is going to give you some medication that will help to mask the pain that you are feeling. Unfortunately, this doesn’t do much to help with the problem, it simply makes it easier for you to be able to endure it. Other forms of therapy such as hot and cold compresses, electrical stimulation and traction may also be recommended in order to help with the difficulty. The traction does help with stretching your back and relieving the pressure so that you can start recovering and eliminating a lot of the pain. If you happen to have a rented traction device, it is wise to use if soon before retiring to sleep at night for the most benefit.

There are also some other things that you can do such as specific stretching exercises or other forms of exercise which will greatly help to reduce the pain that you are now feeling. It will also help to shorten the length of time that you will be experiencing the difficulty. These important steps will put you back on the road to health in the shortest amount of time possible.

Yeast Infections (AKA Candida) – What They Are and How to Test For Them

June 12th, 2008 GeorgeJackson Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

There are billions and billions of organisms (known collectively as flora) in your lower intestine, or bowels, that help us digest food and serve other functions as well. There are many different strains of these organisms, over 100, in fact. Candida just happens to be the most well-known of these. There are also a number of different strains of candida. The most insidious of them is candida albicans. Let’s oversimplify a minute and divide all of the flora into two camps, the ‘bad guys’ and the ‘good guys’.

All of these various strains of bacteria and other organisms are necessary for a healthy, functioning body. But, if some strains of these organisms increase in numbers and others diminish in numbers, an imbalance is created in your bowel flora. If this condition becomes chronic (or long-term), the medical term for it is Bowel Dysbiosis. Candida is just the ‘poster child’ for dysbiosis (remember, the most famous one).

The numbers of these ‘bad guys’ (including candida) grow very, very large and give off many toxins. They’re reproducing, living, excreting waste and dying in your system. (TMI – too much information? Sorry.) Since there are billions and billions of them, you can see why they can wreak so much havoc!

Meanwhile, the ‘good guys’, which are necessary for good digestion and absorption of nutrients from food, greatly drop in numbers. As things get worse, symptoms develop such as heartburn, gas, bloating, anal itching and vaginitis, much of it from the toxins generated.

The toxins accumulate faster than your body can eliminate them. And as they do, your body defenses weaken. As that happens, candida and other organisms like bacteria can infect other body areas, causing athlete’s foot, jock itch, skin and nail infections, fatigue, depression, depression, headaches, low energy, and many other symptoms.

The Candida “Spit Test”

This test is simple but it’s not perfect. Still, the price is right. And there is no definitive blood test for candida. When you get up in the morning, before you put anything into your mouth, work up some saliva and spit in into a clear glass of water. Within 1-30 minutes, check the glass. The saliva should disperse since saliva is water-soluble. You might have a yeast concern if you see:

- strings coming down from your saliva

- water turning cloudy

- specks or flecks suspended in the water

- your saliva sinks to the bottom

Something Else to Be Concerned About

Because both bowel dysbiosis and candida irritate the bowel lining, they can create a condition known by the colorful term “Leaky Gut Syndrome” (literally, holes in the intestine). After Leaky Gut has developed, the stage is set for other invasions. This allows toxins that should stay in the intestine to penetrate the protective barrier of the gut, allowing both food and chemical sensitivities to come into play. In addition, large undigested proteins and fats can find their way into your blood supply and go anywhere your blood goes. This can contribute to things like high cholesterol and atherosclerosis. Details on Leaky Gut will have to wait for another article.

Easy Steps to Cure Your Anxiety

June 12th, 2008 MikeSchlacter Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

If you’ve ever experienced anxiety chances are you never want to again. There are many ways you can try avoiding anxiety but lets start you off with 10 steps to actually curing anxiety. Not everyone can avoid it but they can find a way around it, it’s amazing the little things you can actually do to help.

Reduce the amount of caffeine your body takes- Believe it or not caffeine will actually make you become more jittery and it has an up and down effect on your body. Sure you’ll get the energy you need but it will only stay for about 6 hours before you need it again. Adding caffeine may also add an addiction and then you’ll be dealing with two mental issues instead of just one.

Stop worrying about things- Many people will worry about bills, things that can happen, money issues, grades and other things. These people will always expect the bottom to drop out of them, even if they haven’t happened. By worrying all the time they never see the joy in life.

Sleep- If you get the proper amount of sleep you’re body should be able to focus on just about any task at hand. However, if you lack sleep your chances of having an anxiety attack become stronger.

Get educated- Get as much material as you can find on anxiety and learn about it. By doing this you’ll know you aren’t alone and that others have suffered and found a way around it. Plus, you’ll learn about how to control and conquer your disorder and maybe what sets it off. Find out what causes your anxiety and avoid it. By knowing if there is something specific that triggers it you can hopefully avoid anxiety.

Join an anxiety group- This is a great way to find support with others that are going through the same issues and you’ll have someone to talk with about it. There’s a group for just about everything you can imagine and now you’ll have one that can actually help you out. These groups may meet weekly, monthly or even online but the best part is they’ve been through what you are going through and may be able to help you. If they can’t help at least they will be the shoulder you need.

Exercise- Many people don’t realize that exercise actually helps them in many ways besides building muscles. By taking a walk or doing a few sit ups you’ll get your mind off the thoughts and into something else, which will help when anxiety tries kicking in.

Eat better- Those that actually eat healthy tend to have less health issues. Instead focus more on what you are placing into your body and not about those that can hurt it. Try drinking more water, many people tend to skip water and drink caffeinated products or something of lesser value. By eating and drinking sugary products you are actually increasing your chances of having an anxiety attack.

Get out and meet people- Many times just by socializing with others you can overcome anxiety disorder. By staying indoors you are only helping your anxiety manifest and become something that much bigger. But by going out and meeting people you’ll not only be outside the home but smile more and learn about those around you and the community you live, this hopefully lessening your fears.

Reward yourself- Set up a few goals for yourself, make sure they are small at first. Once you reach one of these goals reward yourself to something you like doing. It doesn’t matter if this is getting your nails done at a mall or going and purchasing a coffee. Remember if these aren’t working you should see a professional to see if there is anything he/she recommends to help you cure your anxiety.

Wouldn’t it be great to finally cure your anxiety once and for all? It’s a reality. Read more about a simple method over at Linden Method Review.

Here’s How to Overcome Depression

June 12th, 2008 MikeSchlacter Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

You woke up this morning not wanting to get out of bed. Knowing you had to you slowly get out of bed, got dressed and grab that cup of coffee. Dread fills you as you get in the car to head to work. No longer do you want to drive, instead thoughts of curling up in bed and crying come over you. It would be easy but people depend on you to make a living so you trek on.

But how long can you go through this? If you’ve experienced anything like this you are probably going through a depression. Believe it or not over 120 million people suffer from depression a year. Of those people not even half will get the help they need.

When depression hits there is very little a person can do except trudge through it the best they can. One may lose a job, a marriage, or friendship during a depression and this only continues the cycle into this spiral until they are so deep into it they can barely function or it just become second nature. A person that can see the signs though can avoid the depression or even overcome it if it is the beginning. Even family members that spot the signs can help the person through the depression.

Signs such as lose of appetite, not wanting to talk, emotional are just a few things to look for. Watch for a person that lacks interest in things they use to love to do as another sign. Now that you know the signs, it is time to turn the table and make them work for you. Knowing the things to watch for is half the battle on overcoming depression.

Find out why you/them are feeling this way and talk about it. Sometimes it is conversation and talking out things that gets someone to feel there is hope at the end of a very dark tunnel. Clean around the house, people that tend to hit the slumps end up getting more down in the dumps when their house is taken over by clutter and mess. Take the person out to do what they normally love doing. A breath of fresh air also helps, so if they aren’t up for getting out in public maybe they’ll walk around the block or go up the road for some ice cream.

If you’ve done everything you can think of to get out of depression, try getting help. A doctor or a psychiatrist will be able to properly diagnose the problem and if you need a medication can be prescribed to you. If not they always know another solution to help you along the way.

Depression is such a scary place to be, especially when you have no clue how you got there in the first place. With that being said it is also very easy to slip into and much harder to crawl out of. No one should ever have to suffer through depression and if they do, a helping hand can get them through it. Will you overcome depression? Can you help someone you love today?

Wouldn’t it be great to finally overcome depression once and for all? It’s a reality. Read more about a simple method over at Easy Calm Review

If You Want to Shed Those Unwanted Extra Pounds Now Read On!

June 11th, 2008 NickJarvis Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

Do you dream of losing fat and inches off of your body? So that you can make that dream come true, and so that you can be more content with your health, you need to begin a workout routine that allows you to not only lose fat, but also gain muscle at the same time. Metabolism is increased as you gain muscle and will help you burn more calories. When you begin to lose fat, you will find that it is easier to gain muscle. Both of your goals will be achieved at the same time by correct exercise. Below you will find a guideline for an excellent plan that is made of only two simple steps, but it will produce tremendous results.

1. Shed Those Extra Pounds

Interval training is one of the quickest methods to burn fat off of your body. According to the American College of Sports and Medicine, a workout of short, high intensity workouts burn more calories than one with long, slower workouts. Interval training is training at a high intensity. Slow exercises are interrupted by very intense cardio workouts. This provides your system with a complete body workout and succeeds in maximization of the caloric and fat burning abilities.

Both the aerobic and anaerobic body systems will burn fat when you do these exercises. The fast aerobic exercises get the anaerobic system started and that uses the energy stored in the body’s muscles. Oxygen is utilized to turn the body’s carbohydrate store into energy when the slow workouts get the aerobic system activated. The alternating of systems burns the maximum amount of calories while also building muscle.

How do you go about beginning interval training? Always begin by warming up your muscles, which walking in place is a great way to accomplish this. Once you feel that they are warmed-up you will need to loosen the muscles, which will require that you stretch. After stretching is done then a two minute slow interval can start. Calisthenics such as sit-ups, squats, or crunches are excellent exercises for slow intervals. 100-110 is the goal heart rate per minute you want to achieve. You should slow your exercise if your heart rate is higher than this.

Your fast interval will start once your two minutes are over. This two-minute interval will consist of high impact exercises like running or skipping rope. Repeat these two-minute intervals alternating between fast and slow for 30 minutes to an hour for maximum results.

2. Increase Muscle Growth

Even though interval training does increase muscle gain, you can get better results in a shorter amount of time if you utilize a two-fold interval training and weightlifting routine. Alternating daily between interval training and weightlifting is the most effective way to accomplish this. You are still burning calories and building muscles, while it gives your weight lifting muscles a day to rest.

You’ll need to complete all of your exercises slowly to get the maximum usage of each muscle on the days you complete your weightlifting routine. A variety of lifts, which exercise the inner and outer thighs, triceps and biceps, delts, gluts, pecs, etc., are very necessary.

Because the abs are more resilient than the other muscles, they can be worked on every day without giving them a rest day. Because of this, endeavor to include both crunches and sit-ups in workouts both days.

By utilizing this two-pronged attack, results are maximized since you are actually burning fat and increasing muscle simultaneously. Why wait to be trim to build muscle or muscular to burn those calories?

Yoga Flexibility Training

June 11th, 2008 TracyRenning Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet No Comments »

Do gymnasts and dancers need yoga?

Yoga improves the flexibility of the body by improving the range of motion. There are various types of yoga, each having its own focus area. E.g. Hatha yoga has proved to positively increase the muscle movement i.e. the flexibility. Yin yoga helps to move the flexibility from muscle tissue to connective tissue which is very beneficial.

We can say that yoga and dance are somewhat similar- both include movements as well as poses or postures. The difference is that yoga focuses on the physical as well as the mental aspect whereas dance stresses only on the external aspect. We can say that a dancer may look good but a yogi may feel good.

Hence, regular dance practice may improve the flexibility of the body externally but, to achieve a complete development of flexibility dancers should opt for yoga exercises. Adding yoga exercises to regular dance practice has been found to increase flexibility, improve stage performance and decrease stress levels and improve mental fitness in dancers.

Choosing the right yoga technique is very essential for a dancer. Those who focus on the joints and muscles may opt for kundalini yoga whereas for strength and endurance athanga yoga style may be chosen.

Gymnasts need to have a lot of stamina, physical as well as mental fitness and flexibility as well. Though by a gymnast can achieve flexibility by regular training but, similar to dancers, the flexibility is only external. For a complete physical and mental development, all gymnasts should practice yoga.

An essential part of the workout of professional gymnasts is yoga stretching. The flexibility requirement of the body can easily be achieved by a proper yoga workout. Gymnasts need to constantly challenge their bodies by holding their bodies in stretched positions for longer periods and stretching more and more every day. It is advisable that they do this under the guidance of a certified yoga trainer.

Benefits of yoga over dance and gymnastics:

• Yoga helps to improve the mental functioning

• Improves lung capacity therefore higher level of energy is seen

• Helps to reduce stress

• Help in maintaining the balance in dances like ballet dancing etc

• Helps improve stamina

• Boosts immunity

• A few poses for flexibility are as below:

Tadasana - Stand straight with your feet together and hands at your side. Now slowly raise both your hands upwards, fingers pointing towards the sky. Now slowly raise your heels as much as you can and stand on your toes. Repeat 3-4 times.

Trikonasana - Stand straight with your legs apart. Now slowly raise both your hands on each side so that they are parallel to the shoulder. Bend towards the right side such that the index finger of your right hand touches the right toe. Simultaneously, your left hand should go upwards. Return to normal position and repeat with the other side.

Similarly one can try poses like Bhujangasana, Shirshasana, Sarvangasana to gain flexibility, strength and power in your body.
